Ammonium phosphomolybdate is the inorganic salt of phosphomolybdic acid with the chemical formula (NH4)3PMo12O40. It contains the remarkable phosphomolybdate ion complex.

Synthesis

Ammonium phosphomolybdate can be made by heating ammonium molybdate combined with phosphoric acid and nitric acid, yielding ammonium nitrate, water, and ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate.

12 (NH4)2MoO4 + H3PO4 + 21 HNO3 → (NH4)3PMo12O40↓ + 21 NH4NO3 + 12 H2O
